Motocross: Desalle injured as Ramon wins Belgian MX Championship round four

Motocross NewsDesalle injured as Ramon wins Belgian MX Championship round fourMX1 World Championship leader Clement Desalle collided with another rider over a jump at the fourth round of the Belgian Motocross Championship at Tongeren and in the ensuing crash he briefly dislocated his right shoulder.

The Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 rider will go for a scan today but is hopeful of a positive prognosis after the relatively short time the limb was displaced compared to a similar injury picked up on the same shoulder at Valkenswaard in Holland in 2010.

The Belgian was able to win the following race two weeks later in Portugal on that occasion. The dislocation - and other small scrapes - occurred after the 23 year old tangled with Jeremy Van Horebeek in the first moto.

Despite a coating of rain on Saturday, Tongeren was in good shape for racing and Desalle's team-mate Steve Ramon defeated GP peers Ken De Dycker, Davide Guarneri and Shaun Simpson to the top step of the podium.

The former World Champion had sufficiently recovered from his stretched right groin to compete at the tricky circuit south of Hasselt and went 1-2-1 in the three races.

"The groin is getting better and today it was OK; no pain or complaints and I made no mistakes with my riding," Ramon said. "The rain was pretty good for the dirt and the track was technical with short-bumps and an 'old school' layout. I was feeling good and confident and it showed in the motos."

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 will head to Sweden this week for the first of three Grands Prix in a row; Germany and Latvia forming the rest of the busy trip.

Sports Briefs 6/26/11

Chris Volstad drove in a run in an AL ballpark and pitched into the seventh inning and won for the first time since April and the Florida Marlins beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Saturday night. In the game moved from Miami because of an upcoming concert at the Marlins' stadium, Volstad (3-7) batted for himself because the game was played under NL rules. He also kept the ice-cold Mariners to two runs on five hits before leaving with two outs in the seventh. It was Volstad's first victory since April 26 and only the third Florida victory in the month of June. Leo Nunez pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 21st save of the season. Jason Vargas (5-5) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings for Seattle.

The M’s and Marlins wrap up their three-game series at Safeco Field tonight on 1030 KMAS. The broadcast begins at 6 PM.

The Tacoma Rainiers opened at four-game series in Las Vegas by pounding the 51s 12 to 2. Tacoma’s Chris Seddon held Las Vegas to two runs on six hits in eight innings. The Rainiers pounded out 15 hits scoring seven runs in the seventh inning, which included at three-run home run by Ryan Langerhans, a two-run homer from Luis Jimenez, and a solo shot by Mike Wilson. Matt Tuiasosopo added a two-run homer in the fourth. Matt Mangini also batted in two runs for Tacoma. The teams play game two today.

The Seattle Sounders FC host the New England Revolution today (Sunday) at 1 PM.

Defenders Zach Loyd and George John scored off corner kicks 5 minutes apart in the first half to help FC Dallas rout the expansion Portland Timbers 4-0 on Saturday night. Brek Shea and Jackson Goncalves also scored for Dallas, and Captain Daniel Hernandez had two assists, setting up both first-half goals with almost identical corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made two saves for his MLS-leading eighth shutout of the season. FC Dallas, 9-4-4 overall and 8-1-3 in its last 12 games, moved into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference. The Timbers, making their first trip to North Texas, dropped to 5-7-3. They are 0-4-1 in their last five and 0-5-2 on the road. Portland has been outscored 15-3 away from home.

Allyson Felix won the Четыресто meters at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Ore., Saturday, setting up the possibility she might compete in two events at worlds this summer. Felix already has a spot in the 200 as the defending world champion. She has yet to decide whether she will attempt the difficult 200-400 double at worlds in Daegu, South Korea, in August. She only got stronger as the race went along Saturday and held off Francena McCorory at the finish. Debbie Dunn was third. Up-and-comer Tony McQuay of the University of Florida won the men's Четыресто by blowing past former Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner on the home stretch. Wariner faded but held off Greg Nixon for second.

Ryan Dungey raced to his first AMA Pro Motocross Championship victory of the year, finishing second in the first 450 Class moto and rallying to win the second Saturday in the Thunder Valley National. Ryan Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., won the first moto and was second in the second. Australia's Chad Reed, third in both motos, has an eight-point lead over Villopoto in the season standings. Dungey is third, 21 points behind Reed. In the 250 Class, Blake Baggett, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider from Grand Terrace, Calif., raced to his third overall victory in five rounds, sweeping the motos. Jessica Patterson, the DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha rider from Tallahassee, Fla., raced to her second Women's Motocross Championship victory of the year with a moto sweep.

An Emerald Downs spokesman says two racehorses tossed their riders and broke loose just before a race, causing injuries to a jockey and horse owner at the track. Spokesman Vince Bruun tells The Seattle Times that the two horses - Wiley Witch and Cahill's Ride - were being led out of the paddock Saturday afternoon when they threw their jockeys and ran toward the stable area. Bruun says Wiley Witch collided with 70-year-old horse owner Tony Schiro, who suffered a broken femur and possibly a head injury. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. The injured jockey was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries. Bruun says Wiley Witch has been euthanized.

SofuoÄŸlu makes his first podium of season in Assen

Turkish rider Kenan SofuoÄŸlu celebrates after finishing second in the Moto2 Grand Prix in Assen. The picture at left shows Honda’s Marco Simoncelli of Italy (R) and Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo crashing in the first lap, while the other shows Italy’s Michele Pirro after crashing his Moriwaki. Turkey’s Technomag-CIP rider Kenan SofuoÄŸlu finished second in the Iveco TT event in the Dutch city of Assen on Saturday, completing the crash-marred race in slippery and wet conditions behind Team Catalunya Caixa Repsol’s reigning 125cc champion, Marc Marquez of Spain.

After seven races, this was the first podium of the season for SofuoÄŸlu, the Turkish rider who finished eighth in the last race in Silverstone, England. For the 18-year-old Marquez, it was his second victory in his debut Moto 2 championship season. Britain’s Tech 3 rider Bradley Smith came in third. SofuoÄŸlu and Smith were ahead throughout the grueling race, putting up a good fight against Marquez and Japan’s Gresini Racing rider Yuki Takahashi, who made it up to second position before crashing out shortly afterwards with just отгораживающему

The race became more dangerous toward the end as the track began to dry, tires started to wear and accidents therefore were inevitable. Championship leader Stefan Bradl of Viessmann Kiefer Racing, who crashed out with only three laps to go, failed to finish a race for the first time this season and also saw his lead trimmed. Michele Pirro completed a bad day for Gresini Racing after crashing out in the last lap.

As fate would have it, Marquez managed to overtake SofuoÄŸlu and win the unforgettable race by more than two seconds. And the Turkish rider had to make do with second place after he sped past Smith with four laps remaining.

The next Moto2 races this month are the Italian Grand Prix at the Mugello Circuit on July 3, which will be followed by the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring on July 17 and Red Bull US GP in California on July 24. Hence, there is plenty of time for slow starter SofuoÄŸlu to close the gap.

From a press release issued by FTR MOTO:

FTR MOTO AND CORSI THIRD IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER ASSEN

FTR MOTO moved up to third place in the Constructor’s World Championship after a day of mixed fortunes in round seven of the Moto2 World Championship at Assen in Holland on Saturday.

Four FTR riders finished in the top 10 in the 24-lap race and six of its seven finishers took World Championship points after a demanding and dramatic race held in damp conditions at the 2.821-mile circuit in the north of Holland.

Australian Anthony West on the MZ-FTR took his best finish of the season with a fourth place, narrowly missing out on a first podium finish for himself and the German team. Mattia Pasini also took a season-best finish in sixth on the IODA Racing Project FTR M211 while Esteve Rabat continued his recent good form with seventh place on the Blusens STX M211.

West’s MZ-FTR team-mate Max Neukirchner completed the top 10 while Yonny Hernandez was again in the points with 13th on his Blusens STX M211 and Simon Corsi is now the only rider in the series to score points in all seven race as he battled with the conditions and traction problems to cross the finish line in 14th place on the second of the two IODA Racing Project FTR M211s. Corsi sits in third place in the Championship, 60 points adrift of leader Stefan Bradl.

Kev Coghlan was 21st on the Aeroport de Castello M211 and there were crashes for Pol Espargaro (HP Tuenti Speed Up), Kenny Noyes (FOGI/GP Tech Team), Ratthapark Wilairot (Thai Honda Singha SAG), Valentin Debise (Speed Up) and Santiago Hernandez (SAG Team), all escaping injury.

Rabat’s seventh place moved him up two places into 11th in the Championship while fourth place for West rocketed him from 26th to 19th place in the points standings.

“I’d say that was a typically mixed bag of Moto2 results for us,” said FTR’s Steve Bones. “The conditions again played a big part and leave you intrigued as to who is going to challenge – and probably be the bravest!”

“I think Pol Espargaro was in that category as he continually set the fastest lap of the race around the halfway mark in the race and was heading for a strong top 10 finish before sliding out. Hopefully we’ll have good weather for round eight in Mugello next Sunday and enjoy an exciting race.”

Farquhar won the Moto 450 class and then enjoyed success in the Supertwins.

His third victory came in the Supersport 600 race in which he beat runner-up Michael Dunlop.

The Dungannon man beat Dunlop by six seconds in the Open race and then by half a second in the Grand Final in which he set a new course lap record. William Dunlop won the 125cc event.

AMA MX: Short Breaks Into Top Five

Andrew Short broke out of his funk registering his first top-five overall result of the 2011 outdoor season with a strong outing at his home round.

Media Release |  Posted June 26, 2011   Lakewood, CO

Red Bull/KTM Factory rider Andrew Short finished 5th overall at the fifth round of the series, and his hometown race, held at Thunder Valley MX Park in Lakewood, CO.

Short got a decent start in the first moto coming around the corner in 10th position. He rode a solid pace, picking off a few riders throughout the laps. He eventually moved up to 7th by the moto end.

"I was happy with my first moto considering I wasn’t feeling that good at the start of the race," remarked Short. "I had a pretty big get off in practice and it took me a while to recover from it. I was still shaken up from it at the start of the first moto and I struggled a little bit."

Short repeated his first moto start in the second moto rounding the first corner near the top ten. "I was feeling worse in my second moto as the side effects from the earlier crash were really starting to kick in. It was hard to pick up my pace during the second moto."

Short continued to push as hard as he could and managed to climb up to 8th. His 7-8 moto scores earned him an impressive 5th place result. "Overall, I’m happy to finish the race without any major injuries or issues. This is one of my favorite tracks and I had a great time today."

The second member of the team, Mike Alessi, suffered an unusual poor start in the first moto. He came around the first turn around 20th but made an impressive charge through the pack earlier on. By the end of the first lap he had moved well into the top ten and was sitting in 6th. He moved up as high as 4th during the moto before losing one position to Kevin Windham at the end of the race. He finished the first moto in a solid 5th position.

In moto number two, Alessi got off to a good start inside the top five. In the second corner his front tire clipped the rear wheel of Ryan Villopoto’s bike as the two riders battled for a lead position. The contact caused Alessi to crash hard. Alessi took a few moments to recover and eventually ended up pulling off from back pain. After the moto, he reported that his back is slightly swollen but that he will be okay to race for the next weekend.

Lakewood, Colorado - TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racings Chad Reed has retained the coveted red plate after finishing third in the fifth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, the Thunder Valley National in Colorado today.

The Australian, finished both moto’s third but admitted he traditionally struggled at the high altitude track.

Reed got a good start in the first moto and pressured race leader Christian Craig. The two came together allowing Ryan Villapoto to slip past, pushing the Honda rider back to third. While he eventually passed Craig, Reed lost a spot to Ryan Dungey in the closing stages of the race.

In the second moto, Reed took the holeshot, ahead of Dungey and Villopoto. He battled with Dungey for the lead throughout the first three laps, before succumbing to the defending champion who eventually won the race and round.

After losing a spot to Villapoto, Reed finished the race and round third, but retains the 450 class championship lead.

“I was the third best guy today,” said Reed. “I’m happy to be honest. This is a tough track for me and I just felt a little off today.

“I think you learn more on your off days when you get beat. And that’s what happened today.

“We need to make some improvements, and I think I know where we need to make those,” he added.
